Short Resume

Dr. Bhabatosh Banerjee (b.1946), M.Com., Ph.D., FCMA, during his Visiting Professorship in the USA [1995-97: Rutgers University, New Brunswick (1995-96), New Jersey Institute of Technology (1996-97) and DePaul University, Chicago (one Semester)] felt the dire necessity of publishing an academic refereed and international journal in India to be sponsored by IAA Research Foundation. As a Secretary of the Foundation, he consulted several distinguished academics in the States. Back home, the issue was discussed threadbare in a seminar held in the Institute of Modern Management, Calcutta, in December, 1996 and chaired by Professor Sukumar Bhattacharyya, the Founder President of IAA Research Foundation. Out of several alternatives, Indian Accounting Review (IAR), was approved unanimously as the name of the new academic journal for publication of two issues in a year, June and December, respectively. The first issue of IAR was published in January 1997 with Dr. Bhabatosh Banerjee as the Editor because he had a long experience of editing several journals in India [Business Studies published by University of Calcutta (Associate Editor:1982-84), Indian Journal of Accounting  published by Indian Accounting Association (Chief Editor: 1984-97)] beside being in the Editorial Board of many international journals [Accounting Education: An International Journal, Routledge, London (1994- ), Entrepreneurship Journal, Nanyang Technological University (1997 - 2011), and The International Journal of Accounting, UCLA, USA (1995-2000)]. He resigned from Editorship of IAR in January 2017 but still continues as a Consulting Editor.

Dr. Banerjee joined the University of Calcutta as a Lecturer in Commerce in February, 1969 and over time occupied the highest academic position in the University [Professor of Commerce (1985-2011), HoD (1989-91), Dean of Commerce & Management (1987-89; 2003-2005); Co-ordinator (DSA in Commerce: for about 15 years), Co-ordinator, CAS-I (2010-2011)]. 19 research scholars were awarded Ph.D. degree under his Supervision from the Calcutta University between 1982 and 2011 and 10 of them were published.Dr. Banerjee is a senior Member of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India and worked in the Institute as Director of Research (1984-85).

He has a large number of publications in India and abroad. These include: 96 articles published in different academic and professional journals; 11 published abroad (in Japan, the USA, and the U.K.). He published six edited research volumes in the Department under DRS Programme. Under single authorship he published three major UGC projects: Accounting Education in India, 1994 (reviewed in Issues in Accounting Education, AAA, Spring 1996), Regulation of Corporate Accounting and Reporting in India, 2002 (reviewed in The International Journal of Accounting, Vol. 38, No.2, pp.239-242) and Corporate Environmental Management with Special Reference to India, 2009 (published by PHI Learning Ltd.). His modified Ph.D. thesis, Cash Management – A Practical Approach, was published by The World Press Pvt. Ltd. in 1982. Also completed another project on Global Convergence of Accounting Standards funded under DSA in Commerce, University of Calcutta. He has published three text books in Cost, Management Accounting and Finance (all published by PHI Learning Ltd.): Cost Accounting (14th Ed. 2020), Financial Policy and Management Accounting (9th Ed. 2017) and Fundamental of Financial Management (2nd Ed.. 2015).

He attended a large number of international conferences abroad: Annual Meeting (Conference) of American Accounting Association 8 times (held in August): 1986 (New York), 1989 (Hawaii), 1990 (Toronto), 1991 (Nashville), 1996 (Chicago), 2006 (Washington DC), 2007 (Chicago), 2016 (New York). Similarly, he attended 5 times the World Congress of Accounting Educators organized by International Association for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER) in conjunction with International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and presented a paper on each occasion:  6th World Congress (Kyoto, Japan, 1987), Seventh World Congress (Arlington, 1992), 8th World Congress (Paris, 1997), 9th World Congress (Hong Kong, 2002), 13th World Congress (Sydney, 2018). He also attended more than a dozen Asian Pacific Conference organized by University of California, Fresno, USA. Dr. Banerjee offered 35 seminars in reputed foreign Schools in different parts of the world (2 in Australia, 1 in Canada, 2 in Japan, 2 in the U.K. and 28 in the U.S.A.) between August 1986 and October, 2017.

He occupied many exalted position in India and abroad. He was President, Indian Accounting Association (1991), Vice-President of IAAER (1994-97), International Council Member (2010-2012), American  Accounting Association;  Member, Standards Advisory Council (IAAER) of IASB (2010 -11).  He received several awards in India and abroad: International Educator Award (December 2006) from IAA; recognition from AAA as an “Active Member” (August 2006); maiden award from IAAER (January, 2011) “in appreciation of dedicated long-term service” for promotion of accounting education and research; Eminent Teacher Award (November, 2013), from the University of Calcutta and Outstanding Researcher Award from IAA Research Foundation (July 7, 2018).

His areas of Interest are Accounting Education, Environmental Accounting, Cost and Management Accounting, International Accounting and Reporting (including sustainable reporting).

Presently, he is the President of IAA Research Foundation.
